Looks like rhubarb with green stalks to the large (12" - 30" wide) leaves. Plant grows in Northern California, is 5-6 feet tall with a celery like main stalk with white/light green colored flowers that look like broccoli. Seeds do not seem to generate new plants. This plant is a perennial.
This looks like a Rheum. Rhubarb is a cultivated Rheum. When it flowers it can get very tall. http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?i...b:IE-ContextMenu&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&tbs=isch:1 http://images.google.co.uk/images?q...GB&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
Thanks for the reply. Our plant doesn't have any shades of red, do you think that it could still be a Rheum?
