Hi! I need help identifying what sort of cherry fruit this is. Originally, my dad thought that this was some sort of apple tree since a couple weeks back the leaves looked similar. After a couple weeks, we figured that this must be some sort of cherry. I've attached and linked to some photos that I took a few weeks back and some I took today. Also! An additional question--if you know what this plant is, what is the right time to pick it? Thank you! -Ting 7/24 Photo Links: http://www.flickr.com/gp/7650081@N08/G2XRE7 http://www.flickr.com/gp/7650081@N08/RTxeKM 08/31 Photo Links: http://www.flickr.com/gp/7650081@N08/j2F6Uw http://www.flickr.com/gp/7650081@N08/VU2n1D
The easiest way to check your fruit is to cut it in half. A cherry will always have a single stone in the middle, an apple will have 5 pips. See pic.... http://images.google.com/imgres?img...microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA&sa=N Yours looks like a crab apple, not sure of the variety. They are usually very small. They are lovely made into crab apple jelly.
Cherries are succulent and juicy, crabapples such as this one have the firm spongy flesh of orchard apples. Also as with orchard apples there are hundreds of named cultivars present in North America, as well as unnamed spontaneous seedlings along roads, around gardens etc.
Wow. We've been wondering about this plant for the whole year. This is the first time I've heard of crabapples. Thank you very much!
