    Hello,

I'm trying to find out the name of a plant growing on my property, here in lower Connecticut. I know it is an actual landscaping perennial, as I saw it growing in the Montreal Botanical gardens - I believe garden #6 - last September. Unfortunately there was no plant tag visible and no one to ask.

The plant seems to have levels of 4 brownish/purple leaves from a single stalk, grows to about 30 inches, reminds me of a burgandy colored coleus. I said perennial but I believe it self-seeds every year.

The color of the leaves are what makes it interesting - it sends up some small flowers on the central stem in July or so but they are fairly insignificant.

    Any ideas?

    okay.

it's very easy to upload pics to this site...you can do it directly from your computer (as opposed to having to use a hosting site - which you can also still use, too, if you prefer).

you just need to use the 'advanced' reply form and scroll down to the bottom and then click on 'manage attachments' to do the upload. very easy.

You might try comparing to Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate'.

Thanks, Joclyn and Abgardeneer. I'm still figuring out camera but I'm pretty sure what the plant is - purple basil. Someone must have grown it on this street and between the birds and wind, it's everywhere.
