Hello everyone, I'm a complete newbie to gardening and to Northeast USA. I have a few of these shrubs in my garden but don't know what they are. I would like to identify them so I know how to care for them. Currently, they are all twiggy legs with the foliage at the top. I'm not sure if this is what they're meant to look like. I want to find out if I can somehow prune them to encourage some foliage growth underneath. All identification and pruning tips would be gratefully received. Thank You!

Whatever your hedge(?) is you get hedges denser below by pruning the top narrower than the bottom, so light can get in.
