Can anyone ID this plant? It is growing in my backyard, and has grown to abut 6 feet in just one season. It has not yet flowered, and is growing in a shaded area in northern Indiana. Thank you!
I don't think it is a Cestrum sp. The leaves are not as thick and waxy looking as the photos of Cestrum I found on the web. This plant was growing so fast, and I didn't want it to become a tree, I yanked it. I assume it was some kind of weed and I like the flower bed better without it. I put in some forget-me-nots, phlox, hosta, lungwort, and some grasses.
I think you're right...I found some photos of Fireweed, and it looks just like it. It apparently has various uses -- a syrup (or glue), among others. Thanks to both who made the ID!
Fireweed doesn't make multiple branches from the base, your plant doesn't look like one to me anyway - and I've seen thousands of them.
Not now... I yanked it. It was taking over the spot in my garden, and I was afraid it might become a tree. I planted lower shrub types of plants, and prefer that. So I'm afraid, at this point it will remain a mystery.
Reminds me of some kind of solidago. I couldn't really see if the leaves were opposite in the posted pics. Somewhat irrelevant if the plant is now compost, but we haven't come up with a new "stumper" in a few days so this is filling in a bit! Glen
