Found this plant growing out of the basement floor. We just bought the house within the last year, so no idea what the history with this plant is...our basement is pretty dark, and we have a dehumidifier running constantly. The first time we pulled up the plant, we did not have the dehumidifier, but we had acquired one since then. We've pulled it up twice during the summer. We don't tend to notice it until it is a few inches tall. I pulled it up by the root, which was quite long, and I thought we had done that the first time, but it still grew back. There is a teeny, tiny hole in the floor where it popped out of, and it is just the size of the plant, so I don't know if a seed fell in the hole of just the right size, or if the plant created the hole--I'm guessing the latter. We found it growing next to our hot water heater.

Anyone know what it is? Thanks so much!

Photo is too blurry to guess what it is, but what plants are growing on that side of the house that may have their roots extending under the house? Seems nearly impossible that it could have grown from a seed--twice.

Looks leguminous when enlarged. But I'd be more concerned with the fact that it came up there than with what kind of plant it was. I see you have a water heater sitting right there. Might it be leaking into the floor?

I also wondered about the water heater, but don't think it is leaking--we just bought the house within the last year and had an inspector come out before we bought it and everything checked out, and our water bill hasn't been high enough to indicate that anything is leaking. Haven't noticed anything weird with it. We will definitely keep an eye on it, but I don't think that's it.

It's actually kind of in the middle of the basement--it's not along any specific side of the house. We don't have any big trees near the house. We have a medium sized black locust, but I have seen those popping up all over the yard, and they don't look like what grew out of our floor. We have some shrub roses of some sort that are about five feet tall on the other end of the house. We have some ferns along one side, and some very small plants that look like they were just planted within the year out front (one is a dwarf red burning bush, and it's about two feet tall, and nothing taller than that), but other than that, it's just grass and creeping charlie (we're working on that one). I don't know much about plants, but I would think it would have to be a pretty big plant or something very invasive to have roots that would go that far? When I pulled it up, I pulled the entire root out--could it stem from the root of a plant if it has it's own root?

I'll try to get better pictures if it pops up again.
