    Vicia nigricans seems like a good candidate.

    The leaves are round not tiny and thin like vicia

    Is there only the one photograph? And you're certain that those out-of-focus leaves go with those flowers (sometimes an issue with intertwining plants)?

    iNaturalist has 645 species of Fabaceae listed for California -- it might also help to narrow down the search to a specific area, as I think they only show the first 500 or so (or don't show the ones with only 1 observation unless you have a more specific area). Of the ones I looked through, I didn't find a match for the suggested leaves and the inflorescence, but browsing by a single photo in their observations also has its pitfalls.
