British Columbia: Plant a tree in Vancouver

In City of Vancouver, there's a by-law to cut a tree and to plant a replacement tree.
I guess most of you have seen those big list of replacement trees.
Anyone has a good suggestion what to plant in a small yard? And it's a very slow growing tree?
And hopefully it won't grow too tall and big?
