This question was received over the phone:

I would like a recommendation for a type of Dogwood tree that blooms pink, will only reach approx. 8-10 ft. tall, and that will survive well in the Richmond area. I would also like to have it in the middle of my sundeck. Thanks.

Usually dogwood trees exceed 10 ft. in height, however, if you plant them in a decent size container that restricts the roots, you can stunt the growth of the tree.

Types of pink dogwood tree that we would recommend are Cornus kousa satomi and and an eastern dogwood, Cornus florida rubra. However, Cornus kousa satomi is less prone to disease than Cornus florida rubra. We hope this helps.

I have a Cornus Satomi, planted 21/2 yrs ago and moved once in that time - it is spectacular - in full bloom now, around 6 ft tall, covered in blossoms of a deep- rosy pink. I would certainly recommend it - but have never tried it in a pot. I live in Sechelt, which cannot be too different from Richmond, and it has no weather problems.
