I've read different things about pineapple. Some say that the pineapple mother plant will die once it produces a fruit and you have to start over with the baby pineapples, i read somewhere that pineapple can keep producing fruit from the mother plant. Does anyone know which is true?
Usually the former is true, as the pineapple crown, is the next plant, however in Hawaii I have seen side shoots produce non commercial size fruits, that end up in the compost heap.
It depends on the cultivar, though. I grow Abacaxi pineapples (white ones) and they don't die after the first fruit; they set what is called a Ratoon crop - a second set of slightly smaller fruits from the mother plant.
Do you know where I can get the White kind of Pineapple such as the Kona Sugarloaf in Vancouver BC Canada?
Here is a link I found very helpful in starting my first pineapple plant: http://www.unirom.co.uk/nhaggett/MyPineapples/mypineapples.html
Microwave, try your local Organic produce stores or upscale grocers; they're more likely to carry white pineapples than say, Overwaitea. You'll pay a premium for them, though. White pineapples (regardless of cultivar) bruise very easily in shipping, which means they have to have special packing in order to arrive intact; the grocer normally passes this cost along.
Thanks for the tip. I tried a few upscale markets such as Capers, Urbanfare, and Granville Island Markets. They only carry the normal dole, dale monte, and maui gold. Nothing that would resemble a white pineapple. Do you know any places that would deliver to Vancouver? Thanks
Eee. The cost of shipping the darn things without turning them to spiny rinds full of moosh makes them next to unavailable in North America. I had never eaten a white pineapple until I moved to Ecuador; now I won't eat anything else. You can try Planet Organic; they used to have them occasionally (for about $10 a pop!) when I was living in Edmonton.
