    Pine beetles ravaging forests
CanWest News Service, 23 July 2007

A summer beetle infestation, wreaking havoc on Alberta pine trees, is putting about $23 billion worth of commercial timber - 5 million hectares - at risk. But there is a new weapon in the war against the mountain pine beetle: pheromones. Municipal and provincial officials here are testing chemicals that mimic the insects' natural scents to fool them into congregating in certain areas, where they can be caught in funnel traps.
