IMHO, the split should be done now so the plant has all summer to recover. I would do a surgical extraction, which means gently digging out as much soil as you can around the smaller plant, then cutting the roots of the smaller plant below the original soil line (so as to preserve any small root branches). Once all the roots of the smaller plant have been disconnected from the original soil ball, look for the attachment point where the smaller plant is joined to the larger one. Carefully cut that attachment with a very sharp knife. Powder both cut surfaces with cinnamon powder, then plant the smaller plant in its own pot with as much of the roots buried as possible and keep moist and in the shade. Add soil to the original pot to refill what you removed in doing the extraction. The big plant can stay in the sun, but the smaller one has to be kept in the shade until it is rooted in and producing new leaves regularly.
