    Re: What Plant is this?

it's a philodendron (or maybe on monstera) that's using the tree as support. would need pics of the upper part of the tree to id the tree itself.

Looks like a Philodendron or something similar. I'm learning a lot on this forum also! Where did you find it?

valterj - if the plant you want identified is the one I'm thinking of, then it's not a tree. If it is a Philodendron or similar, I'm not sure what they are classed as, but I wouldn't think tree. It's more of a vine, so it may look like a tree. Just to clear that up.

    Re: Philodendron bipinnatifidum ???

I would say it is Philodendron bipinnatifidum. It isn't a tree but instead a member of the Araceae family. The plant is a member of Philodendron subgenus Meconostigma and all the plants in that subgenus are known as "tree Philodendron" due to the shape of the stem and way it can be self supporting. The plant can support itself up to approximately 12 feet (less than four meters) and then will fall due to its own weight. If it has a tree to climb it can easily reach 100 feet (30 meters) in the rain forest.

Virtually all Meconostigma are native to Brazil but are grown all over the world where the weather is warm enough to support the species. They can tolerate brief periods of cold with a slight freeze but often loose their foliage. There are a number of species in subgenus Meconostigma and many look somewhat alike. To be absolutely certain of the species you'd need to take some detail photos but unless you're a collector I doubt it would be worth the time. Some of the rarer species actually have big thorns or spikes on the stem. By the way, the stem isn't the part that supports any leaf. That would be the petiole. The stem is the main axis and support of the plant. The petioles and roots grow from the nodes on the stem.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum can tolerate a dry spell but during the summer should be kept damp. It will tolerate direct sunlight but won't look its best. This link should answer most questions: http://www.exoticrainforest.com/Philodendron bipinnatifidum pc.html
