Not sure what, but not a Philadelphus; that doesn't have its flowers in umbels like that, and also has just 4 petals. Can you add a wider pic of the whole plant?

Will have to wait til it blooms again to find the plant - hopefully. Thanks for your thoughts!

Barb: Melbourne, Australia, photo taken at RBG. They have a Deutzia x kalmiiflora among others; it does somewhat resemble Kalmia. The number of petals and stamens leaves me unsure of what it is. Thanks so much for your thoughts. Di

No it is not a Deutzia, not Kalmia, nor Deutzia x kalmiiflora.

I was keeping very quiet as I do not recognise it at all.
Leaves are interesting... they are so glossy I wonder if it is an evergreen.

When posting plants it is always helpful to know where the pics were taken!
Botanic gardens are another ball game. So many rare and unusual stuff. So that is also REALLY relevant.

Please can you add a pic of the while shrub to give an idea of scale.

I believe I have got it...Anopterus macleayanus. Common name Mountain Laurel, Queensland Laurel or Macleay Laurel.
    It is evergreen!

Amazing - that's it. There's several shrubs in the Australian Forest Walk at RBG. How did you even think of that genus? You must work with plants.
