Phallus impudicus

    This delightful specimen was in full "bloom" a few weks ago in Derby Reach Park Langley. I found it by smell, but obviously I was not the first! It smells like a rotting corpse. So don't necessarily call the cops if you smell a powerful aroma in your local park, it could be this delightful fungus. The young specimens (which I remember seeing as a curious young boy after following a foul smell in the woods of Sussex UK) do indeed look like a human phallus.

    Nice! I've only been hazily paying attention to when these arrive seasonally ... thus far I've seen them early in season and late but not inbetween. I wonder what their triggers are?

    Actually this was early, around Sep 18th. I checked the date I took it.
