Hey! I bought my Phal last spring, while it was in bloom with 3 spikes. After the flowers withered it even got a few new blooms from the top of the spikes, so I figured it was done flowering. I didn't cut the spikes though. One of them withered completely so I cut it, but two of them are green even now, a year later. Should I have cut these too? Or should I do it now? I'm afraid that it won't bloom this year because I didn't cut them. p.s. since last spring it grew 4 new leaves and even a baby orchid on the side with four healthy looking leaves. Is it possible that it needs to accumulate more energy now that there's a new plant growing? http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n86/Dannique_D/13042012470.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n86/Dannique_D/Untitled.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n86/Dannique_D/13042012471.jpg
The container for your Phal does not look appropriate - no ventilation openings. Take a look at the thread titled "Orchids - new shoots?" earllier in this forum. That could be a problem, although the healthy leaves don't seem to indicate root rot. Another possibility is that your orchid is getting too much nitrogen fertilizer. I hardly ever feed the Phals that I've had, and they usually have almost continuous blossoms.
