I have a Phalaenopsis that I picked up at an orchid show about a year ago. I have the parentage on a tag if that is signicant to my question. Anyway, about 2 months ago it started to send up what I thought was a spike. It turns out that it is a baby plant coming out of the stem of the Mother. I know that Phals can form keikis on the ends of spikes, but I've never seen an baby come out of the Mother plant like this. So my question is: is this common or what is going on with my plant? Perhaps it has something to do with its parentage?

Some species are more prone to keiki production than others, but overall it is fairly common.
