After looking all over, I can seem to find if persimmons will grow true from seeds? I have some plants that some kids planted from seeds they got in their fruit, and they don't look like persimmons. Has anyone got any idea as to whether I will get the same fruit from these plants?
A persimmon will grow true enough from seed that you will get a still get a persimmon (Diospyros spp.) If the seedlings are completely unlike the parent, chances are something else germinated before the persimmon did. If it is a persimmon, you may not get a desirable fruit though, or any fruit at all. Regarding the desirable fruit....open pollination introduces new genetic material & some persimmons are incrediblely astringent especially when grown in cool summer climates. As for any fruit at all.....trees are generally male or female and you won't find out until they flower (unless it's a known cultivar). So you need both to get fruit but only the female tree will bear fruit. Persimmon Fact Sheet
