I have some questions that I hope someone can answer about my 9 year old PeeGee Hydrangea. The blooms are beautiful this year and a more intense pink than they have ever been. The problem is that by this time of year it really is kind of sad looking in spite of the beautiful colour. About the second winter a couple of the long branches were broken by heavy snow so the next fall I cut all the branches off close to the trunk, leaving one leaf in most cases..........then felt as if I was holding my breath when Spring came! It survived! I was assured at the nursery that it was suitable for the corner where I wanted to plant it. The branches are so long-3 to 4 ft-that I think it's a good thing I am cutting it back or it would outgrow the space. The poor thing is really quite ugly by the time I've cut all the branches off. Now for my questions. If I pruned again in early summer well before signs of buds-leaving a couple of leaves on the branches-would I end up with more, but shorter branches and therefore a better looking tree? I have a feeling I would end up with smaller...... Myrtle
