I have a large, old pear tree (it bears fruit). The earth around the trunk of the tree seems to be spitting up yellow, cornmeal-like patches around the trunk (about a foot from the trunk). The patches are roundish and look powdery, but they're liquid 8 - 10 inches in diameter. After a few days they crust over and turn brown.

Can anyone identify this and offer suggestions?
