I am trying to grow either a Pear tree or a Red Maple tree in my front yard, which would grow faster?

I assume it is really hot in summer in Houston. Leafburn can be a significant problem for maples even in the Pacific North West
Do remember with pears that if you hope for a good crop of fruit, a pollinator is required.
There are so many ornamental trees to choose from. Goodluck!

If you mean an ornamental flowering pear tree, there must be several equal if not better alternatives.

I'm in a warmer part of Oregon, and I'd take a maple over a flowering pear anyday.

Just protect the trunk for the first season or two, from sun.

Go look at some older maples in your area and see how they are doing.
