We've moved into a new apartment on the west coast of Michigan. The peace lily we have took a real beating and without finding out if it would be good or not, I put the lily on the deck for some fresh air, sunshine and a bit of rain. However it didn't work out too well. We got a couple of big rains and a few harsh sunny days so the poor thing looked like I abused it. We trimmed, petted and apologized for all the mistreatment and brought it inside for some rest and relaxation. But now we notice it is making a "little pop-like sound". My husband first heard it and examined it all over from head to roots to see if an invader insect was camping out amongst the leaves but he couldn't see or find anything a miss. So do peace lilies make a noise especially during the night time? My husband described it as like the sound from the cereal "Kellogg's Rice Krispies"; pop...pop...pop. The sound happens every once in a while. My husband said maybe it is growing pops (aka growing pains for plants). I've heard a couple of pops too. Can anyone help explain this or point us in a direction? (I know some of you are thinking we are on something or that we believe in aliens that become popping plants. But I'm really serious!) Thanks for reading. Blessings! :) Linda
Doesn't sound very peaceful. Maybe it is coming from the cut stems or from materials in the potting soil.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to test it out. The stems are pretty soft-like, not hard or a more woody structure. :) Linda
If the soil became waterlogged while it was outside, that sound you're hearing may be excess water draining out of the soil. That happened to me recently when I accidentally flooded a couple of plants. As soon as I took the saucers away I could hear an audible popping noise as the water drained away.
That is good to know. The noice seems to to have abated. So you may be right on. I had another thought as well; could the sound come as the leaves open up from the tightly wrapped leaves as they begin to open? When the sounds were happening we saw several new leaves that were just opening. Hence this idea, so what do you think? Thanks for the reply! ;)
