Dear Gardeners, I have a rose Peace Lily that is growing in a stunted and warped way. The flowers come out but dry up within a day or two. The plant seems to be growing within itself, and the "stalk" is a dry brown color. I have it on a windowsill with indirect but bright sunlight and have repotted it once, to no avail. I have attached photos below to illustrate my problem. Can someone give me advice on how to bring it back to health? Thank you, FranciL
Your plant looks more like an Anthurium then a peace lily with it's heart shaped leaves and "pink" spath. Because of the way it's growing, ck for pest, especially tiny spidermites. Bright light, temperatures above 60F, and always have it in soil that drains well. Water when about halfway down is dry
Thank you for the info! It does look like an Anthurium! I will check for bugs. SHould I change the soil? I really like this plant. It has grown in the past -- the leaves are much larger, but it just has such a weird stalk.
Unless the soil is compacted, slow draining, or the roots are terrible root-bound, replacing the soil won't do anything to help the plant, it could make things worse. The pot however looks a little to big for the plant, which might be keeping all that excess soil much too wet. I would ck for pest/fine webbing first, if everything is ok, then move to a smaller pot that gives the root-ball only an inch or two of room. Most commercial potting soils are heavy and need plenty of amendments to drain well in a large pot... Less soil means less saturated soggy soil for the roots to suffocate and rot in, and also less likely for a soil fungus to begin.
