Identification: Patterned cap mushroom

    Another mushroom from Mayne Island.
    Medium size; thin white cap with light yellow in centre and light grey patches peripherally; light greyish gills; white stalk, no ring, and slightly expends at the bottom.

    Thank you David for the clear details in description and photos. This appear to be a Stropharia, possibly S. ambigua.

    Thank you Frog for the ID.
    I have a photo of a young Stropharia ambigua with bright yellow cap and white fringe.
    It is one of my favourite mushrooms.
    I didn't realize the pattern changes so much when it grows old, although it is still beautiful.
    Another lesson learned - the appearance can change drastically as the mushroom goes through its life cycle.

    Agreed - significant variability in some species regardless, and significant variability with change of conditions, age etc.
