Re: Winter care for parrot plant

I purchased three tropical plants from Home Depot in Louisiana. They were called "parrot plants". The orange blooms are akin to Bird of Paradise. Leaves are broad and flat about 2-3" wide and 6-8" long.

We kept two of them in full sun and one in shade. All three have started to die.
Leaves are turning brown and rolling up as if they have been frost bitten. We kept them watered and moist and the damage started even before the cool weather.
They have not been in weather below 32 degrees F.

Any advice, as we were very fond of them and they looked great on the patio.

    Hi Mike,

For most tropical plants it's not temps below freezing that will kill them, it's usually temps below 50*F that will cause damage. That tends to be hardiness zones 9 or higher. I get your hardiness zone as 8. Here's a zip code zone finder.

It sounds like you will need to bring them in for the winter. If you want to id your plants you could read the thread that Daniel included or do a google and click on images to see if you can find them.

    Thanks, Newt.
Yes, these parrot plants were in temperatures below 50*F.
I guess I can cut them back, put them in a temperate place for the winter
and hope they come back in the Spring.

Mike, you are so very welcome! If you cut them back and keep them indoors, with proper light and watering they may come back for you.
