    I am always stoked to read articles on slime molds :-).
    I expect the reporters took some license around the "perplexed" bit, as although slime molds are generally insufficiently studied, a fair bit along some lines (such as Kingdom) has been known for quite some time, so it would be surprising for a scientist to not have at least a basic knowledge.
