I have two paperbark Maples in yard. One in front and one in the back. One is leafing out, the backyard one and the other one in the front yard is not. I planted them at different times. My front yard Maple after we planted it, it rained and there was a scortching hot sun which caused the leaves to all fall off.
Now the back yard tree is leafing out great and the Front is doing absolutely nothing but the bark is pealing real well. Does the bark peeling mean it is still very much alive and just slow to leaf out? Just curious. Any information you could give me would be appreciated.

I agree Alex. I have 3 Acer griseums in my garden and they do not leaf out at the same time, there are about 2 weeks gap between the first and the last. I guess it is due to genetic variations, but it is a wild guess ;o))

Thank you all for your replies. I finally took a clipping and picture to the nursery where I purchase it and they have more like them and they are leafing out as well. He looked at picture and buds on branch clipping I took and said it should have leafed out by now and is most likely dead. At least I have one in the back yard that is doing well.
