I found the way this palm carries its fruits graceful but really a bit strange. Maybe someone knows what it is? I saw it in Honolulu, if I remember correctly, in a small park on McCully north of the canal. Actually, yes, I see the very tree on google, north of Kapiolani, in the upper right corner of this unnamed park. Way better pictures than I've seen before on gmaps. That isn't even street view.
Found the name of the park on "nearby photos" Frank C. Judd Minipark. But couldn't narrow down the fan palm. There were several mentioned in various collections, but I couldn't discern enough of a difference to be of any use to you. Those mentioned were the Mexican Fan Palm, Chinese Fan Palm, and the Desert or California Fan Palm and in this case probably none of the above. :) No doubt one of the very knowledgeable people here will know more than I.
Thanks, wrygrass2. It looks like it's going to be "fan palm". I was so blown away by the quality of the satellite view that I didn't see the "nearby photos". It's nice to know the minipark designation.
Thanks, Ron. I've seen a lot of Pritchardia photos lately, from Hawaii even, but nothing that struck me as being the same species as this one. Now I'm looking at Pritchardia on Forest and Kim Starr's Plants of Hawaii. What about Pritchardia thurstonii, Long inflorescence Fiji fan palm The name is what convinced me first; all the photos of it at the first link look like it, including the fruits.
This is not the same individual I first posted, but I was very excited to see the label on this Pritchardia thurstonii at National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai, at the McBride Garden. It was like seeing a friend whose name I almost remembered.
