I have a whole bunch of palm seeds that have been sitting around for a year or 2 and was wondering if they are still viable?? Peace
Depends on the palm species, but worth a try. Cocos nucifera seeds won't keep anything like that long; Phoenix dactylifera seed has been germinated after sitting around for close to 2,000 years.
ill give a quick list of what i know of: phoenix silvesteris, king palm, queen palm, livistonia chiinensis, caryota maxima himalaa, Ptychosperma elegans, and a type of Coccothrinax, an also i believe a type of chameadorea
I've seen some articles on this and IMO ... a load of crapoly. The seed was discovered during an excavation of Herod's palace. Cheers, LPN.
Doesn't surprise me too much, but what's your evidence for not believing it? Recent contamination such as a date stone dropped by one of the workers on the site? Or outright fraud? For CP's seed, I can't suggest other than try them and hope for the best!
Just naturally suspicious I guess. There are a number of things people accept at face value, I'm one of the few that don't. As for the orginal question, good advise. You'll never know if those seeds will germinate without at least trying. Best of luck. Cheers, LPN (Barrie).
