Does any one know what the minimum soil depth would be to grow a needle palm or trachycarpus (takil or fortunei) . I ask this because I'm wondering if it would be safe to plant one of these near a septic tank (about 2 ft under ground). I could always add more soil on top if required to make soil deeper. Thanks :)
It shouldn't be an issue for the Needle Palm but might be for the Trachycarpus. Many moisture tolerant plants will self-prune their roots at the saturated soil level. A tall Trachy could windthrow if not deeply rooted. HTH Chris
yes, the roots of Trachycarpus fortunei are pile growing, it goes (and has to go) very deep into the ground.
