My palm seems to not be 'using ' the water..And I've found two small dead plants in the center of my pot. Any suggestions?
Could be root rot; you may want to take it out of the pot to look at the roots. (I'm assuming there are drainage holes in the pot and you don't have the plant standing in water.) Bad signs: dark, mushy roots, unpleasant smells. Good signs: firm, white or yellow roots, no smell. I'd also check the foliage for white, cottony, fluffy spots, just in case mealybugs are involved. It's not the most likely cause, but someone pointed out to me a couple years ago that plants with mealybug infestations often (though not always) slow down their water usage. It's probably that either the roots or the soil are bad, but it never hurts to check for mealybugs.
Thanks for the replies...I will take them out of the pots today and check it out. Both pots have drainage, and I don't think I have a pest problem, but may take the magnifying glass to church also... I also am trying to find a small amount of palm fertilizer. I don't want or need a whole lot. I live in Iowa and these plants are for making the baptistry pretty. And they have done a good job til now. The plants are pushing up out of the dirt also, and you can see roots going down to the dirt...should I also repot??
I don't know what kin of palm it is but here is a informative site http://www.plant-care.com/majesty-palm.html
