The following two palms were cultivated in the beach gardens/park in Santos, Brazil. Any ideas what they are? Sorry that the second picture doesn't give much to go on (I was more concerned with the picture composition than with identification at the time of shooting...) Thanks in advance! Doug
Cycad, not palm. May be Cycas Circinalis... Something similar, at least, one way or the other. I think C. Circ. comes from equatorial Africa actually, so probably not that.
Thanks. Based on some pictures on the web, it does seem to be close if not the same. I can't find out much on-line about cycads indigenous to Brazil.
They're Cycas, and native to east Asia. Brazil is a bit short on cycads. From Colombia through Mexico and the Caribbean, there are quite a lot of native species, especially of Zamia, which has done well at island-hopping and adapting to habitats ranging from forest floor to rocky pineland (Florida and the Bahamas) and even growing epiphytically in trees. Dioon and Ceratozamia, too. http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/PlantNet/cycad/chikey.html
