It's been suggested that my palm is a Canary Island Date Palm. Do you concur? Is it so bulbous on the bottom b/c it was never pruned? Any tips on maintenance? Specifically, can I just saw off the lower branches to encourage upward growth? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Looks like a CID to me... Never can tell with these what they'll do. A neighbour of mine has a CID with 10' fronds and no trunk at all... A good friend has one the same approximate age with 10' of clear trunk and 6' fronds. A third local one, in front of a Starbucks no less, looks absolutely like a 15' pineapple....

Agree with Canary Island Date Palm Phoenix canariensis.

I'd say it is bulbous because it has been pruned too heavily, the leaves ("fronds") should be left longer, and not cut off until they die naturally. It'll look much better if the leaves are left longer.

This on looks quite healthy. As pointed out, no need to prune those fronds prematurely, but many are for gardening convenience.
I sure hope there's some ice cold beer in that cooler :)

    Cheers, LPN.
