I was given 3 amaryllis bulbs for Christmas 2016. I kept the bulbs going through the winter and then planted them in my covered garden in the spring of 2017. My covered garden is a 16 x 8 x 9ft hoop greenhouse that keepings things dry but inside temp is about the same as the outside temp because its open at both ends. The bulbs grew last year but having just finished flowering didn't do much else. As fall approached I decided to leave the bulbs in the ground, I figured the bulbs would either survive or not. Imagine my surprise this spring when all 3 bulbs came back very healthy. And then I noticed a bud forming on one. This is the result....... I've read that they will survive in zone 8 if protected but here is proof that if kept dry they will survive, overwintered in the ground here In Vancouver.
