Over the Top

    There's been a lot of talk about abnormally high growth rates for Maples this year. Here are a couple of pics to prove it. The first is A.p. 'Tiny Tim' which is a dwarf variety with supposedly slow growth. You can see from the picture that the older growth was indeed slow, but the veritable fountain of longer, newer stems all occured this year! All of these will have to come off later so the plant won't get completely out of shape (I'll use them for scions).

    The second pic is of A.j. 'Giant Moon', which is exhibiting some giant growth! The longest stem has almost 2 feet of it! Ridiculous! These plants were fertilized with a little Hollytone early in the spring, but I don't think that accounts for the insane growth rates I'm seeing.

    Anyone else have pics of Maples with "over the top' growth this year?
