About 10 years ago, I planted a seed and sprout out of a grapefruit. This sprout is now over 10 feet tall and very root bound. It's very hardy and I'm hoping that it can be planted outside in a sheltered spot. On our block, there are palm trees and other tropical plants that survive the winter. Maybe the grapefruit tree can, too? Have any of you had experience with this?

A grapefruit tree is unlikely to survive outdoors in our area. The Meyer lemon variety is relatively more hardy and even it requires protection during the colder parts of the year.
