We have 2 ornamental plum trees that have berries on them about the size and color of cherries. Can someone tell me what these are and are they poisonous to our dogs.

    Thank you

Small plums. The species is Cherry-plum (Prunus cerasifera). They're edible, both for you and your dog. Usually better for making plum jam than eating fresh, but try them to see.

Numerous kinds of purpleleaf plums have been named over the years, not all of them forms of P. cerasifera. Three such seen often where I live are 'Spencer Hollywood' ('Hollywood' misapplied), 'Newport' and P. x blireiana. Three common ones that are forms of P. cerasifera are 'Thundercloud', 'Krauter's Vesuvius' and 'Pissardii'. Start by looking at pictures of these last to see if any resemble yours. Unnamed purpleleaf seedlings are also seen where these trees are grown much, both ones that have come up on their own and those that have been planted by someone sticking pits in the ground or starting them elsewhere and then planting the resulting seedlings out.
