Hi, Last May I inherited a potted ornamental orange tree. I live in Missouri. It did well outside all summer and had fruit. It is very old, maybe 20 years, and is about 4-5 feet tall. About 2 months ago (September) I took it inside (it gets very cold here) and put it under a plant light. Once inside it bloomed and started developing fruit which are now large pebble-sized green balls. In the last 3 weeks it has started dropping much of its leaves. About 1/3 to 1/2 of its leaves are gone. Some of the leaves are turning yellow. They don't look healthy. They are starting to shrivel, many of the green leaves are dropping. They fall off at the slightest touch. The leaves at the very top are in slightly better shape than the rest. Please help, I want to save this plant. I measured the soil temperature during the day and it is just up to 60 degrees F. It may get cooler at night, I am not sure but will measure it this evening when it gets down to about 30 degrees F. outside. It is not in direct sunlight, only under a plant light. I haven't changed how I have been watering it all summer and fall. I am afraid to inspect the roots because every time I touch the plant now, bunches of leaves fall off. Is there anyway to save it? The plant light is a single florescent tube. Do you think maybe the light isn't intense enough and maybe I need to add a second light? It doesn't seem all that bright to me. In addition to the plant light is a regular room light. I have the timer set to give the plant 10 hours of light. The room light will often be on for 3-4 hours longer than the plant light. One last thing, when I brought it indoors, I put it near a heating vent. The warm air is not blowing directly on it, but near it. Do you think that keeps the air too dry for the tree? It gets dry here in the winter anyway. Thanks.
