Good morning, I've just moved to Chilliwack and I have quite a large (and bare) south facing front yard. I saw a picture of a beautiful mexican orange blossom hedge and thought it would look great as the border for my yard. I was wondering if this would work here in Chilliwack? Any thoughts?
Are to talking about Mexican (Mock) Orange Bush Chiosya sp.? If so it would depend upon what zone you are in - it is listed as zone 7-8 (depending upon what you read) and I believe you are much colder in Chilliwack......it does well in my gardens but I am zone 8b Vancouver.
The hardiness map says chilliwack is zone 8a. We are typically 5-6 degrees hotter or colder than vancouver.
If you are zone 8 then the plant should survive.....all you can do is try. Mine are "Aztec Pearl" and have a fine, narrow leaf; looks very pretty and tropical and very beautiful when they flower. FYI, they are easy to prune and keep shaped. :) Good luck.
Okay down here most of the time, although many local plants have discolored branches as though affected with root or stem rots - probably you should incorporate adequate amount of sand if your planting site soil is not already well-aerated. Coldest winters may cause losses, I saw adverse effects on this shrub after the cold of 1990.
