Hello, I just recently bought this awsome Sango Kaku from Lowes for 78.00. As you can tell in the pics there are numerous long runners along with the main "bunch" towards the middle. I am thinking that some of the runners need to be pruned but I am having a hard time bringing myself to do so without some ideas/knowledge of which ones would be the the right ones to cut. The main leader is the one that goes off the top of the pics. Here's the pics....
Young trees need to grow several years before you do much pruning. Plant it and let it grow for a year or two and then take a look. 'Sango Kaku' tends to be a multi-trunk tree anyway. Most pruning should be done in late winter before it leaves out, so if you need to remove crossed branches or narrow crotches, I would wait until next February. It looks like the tree was "pushed" and could use some staking for a year or two. Dale
Thanks so much for the response... Would it be a wise guess to think that this tree is around 2yrs old? Thanks, Joe
