Okay, this kinda has to do with gardening... We have a water dish for our smoking friends to use outside as their ashtray... This morning as I was watering my planters, this spider was floating in the dish... Any idea on what it is??? I've never in my life seen a spider like this before! Eew, eew... but what a beautiful picture it makes! I left it in the dish for the pictures... in fact, it's still in there... Like the air bubbles effect?
Jumping spider, which would probably like to be rescued soon. These active hunters are cuter than most spiders and fun to watch as they negotiate walls, windows, plants, fingertips..stick something in there for it to climb out and watch as it turns to look back at you with its comparatively large main eyes (there are multiple smaller ones as well)--if it hasn't drowned. I once saw a zebra spider (locally common jumping spider with a white body striped black) spot a moth resting on my utility room window, position itself so that it was directly above the moth on the glass, cement a dragline in place with the tip of its abdomen, and launch into the air, to end handing by the thread a little below where the moth had been, now with the moth in its fangs, like a cat with a mouse in its teeth. Amazing, Spiderman!
It was dead when I found it.... sorry... plus, I have a really hard time finding spiders 'cute' or 'fun to watch'... that's really hard to do when I'm jumping up on top of a washing maching like it's a mouse! I don't think I'll ever be a spider-person... just not my thing... (poor little moth) Thanx for the response though! I'm going to research that some more... just for the sake of knowing...
Paulina: Eight legs and eight eyes, the Arachnids are, in reality, quite fascinating. Hit your local library to do a little research on these little guys and you just may convince yourself that they are one of the gardeners best friends.
Arachnophobia defies logic, familiarity and even fascination. Trust me. Desensitization works just a little bit, in context - that is to say, I can get used to some of them in the garden (although even that has an upper size limit) but transfer them into the house, and the sensitivity is as great as ever.
