oak tree fruit but its not an acorn

    I see these "fruits" in my back yard under a large oak tree. this is the only tree in the area but I cannot find any information about other oak fruit other than acorns. any idea what this is?

    It's a gall, caused by the larva of an insect. Cut one open, and you'll find a tiny grub inside.
