Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows where in Vancouver I can find agar over the counter? Potato Dextrose Agar or Malt Extract Agar is prefered but plain Nutrient Agar will do. Thanks in advance.
I'm trying to clone mushrooms. I ended up finding Agar in an Asian foods store and Light Malt Extract in a brew shop (for those interested).
I live in the the Dunbar-Southlands neighbourhood of Vancouver near UBC and I buy agar agar powder at WEIGH TO GO BULK FOODS, 3534 West 41st Avenue (1/2 block east of Dunbar Street), Vancouver, BC. Tel:: (604) 266-6206. SOUTHLAND FARM MARKET, 3004 West 41st Avenue (across the street from Kerrisdale Elementary School), Vancouver, BC Tel: (604)264-0112 caries agar agar in stringy block form.
How much grams is the agar in WEIGH TO GO BULK FOODS? And what's the price? Urgent please reply. I'm trying to culture bacteria from plastic water bottles. Also do they sell petri dishes?
The agar powder is priced at $10.00/100 grams. I think you will have to go elsewhere to buy petri dishes.
You could give the purchasing dept. at UBC or the Business Administrator of the Biology Dept. of UBC a call and see where they buy their stuff like petri dishes and chemical/biological glassware from, plus nutrient agar... a petri dish, as you may know, is just a little shallow glass dish about the size of a slightly larger individual dipping sauce dish for a meal, so you could even probably buy one of those at any Asian supply shop if made out of sterilizable glass...
