This "tree" sprouted about a couple months ago and has rapidly grown. I think it's a nut tree from what I can tell, but would appreicate any opinions as it needs to be moved. It has alternating odd numbered leaves, 15 on lower branches. It has a bark look to the base of the tree but is green,red and smooth on rest. There are no fruit. Thanks in advance.
Likely an Asian walnut. Butternut is similar but I think wouldn't usually have so many leaflets making up a leaf that long. If you look at a guide discussing walnut trees in detail it will tell you how to tell them apart. There are actually quite a few of these in this region. The nut this grew from probably came from a much larger specimen growing nearby, it's not the kind of nut that would've come from a store or have fallen off a truck hauling food. When I have talked to occupants of sites with large trees they have given me names like "white walnut" or maybe someone was once close with "butternut".
Presumably sown by a squirrel. It is rather close to the fence, but worth keeping as it is such a nice tree. Maybe when it starts to get large, you can negotiate with your neighbour to remove part of the fence to allow it to grow better. It will be old enough to produce nuts of its own in about 10-15 years or so. The nuts are edible.
Thanks for the info. I do believe it's a Japanese Walnut. I live a block from the Hope Slough where there are an abundant amount of very large trees including ones that are the mature size of mine. Since the spread of this tree when mature is so large I will have no choice but to remove this tree. I was thinking of transplanting it at the slough, two trees came down in a storm anyways. When and how do you think I should do this? I believe I also have 2 ft. Filbert which will also be moved. Thanks again.
