Hello everyone. I am a rank novice pruner with a 15-year-old apple tree that was last pruned 3 years ago -- and before that, I don't know how often. See the attached pictures for the sad state of the art.

I can do an OK job with most of the tree, but I'd love to know what to do with the several vertical branches that extend far above the main crown of the tree. Cut them off 1/3 at a time? Weight them? Do nothing? Something else?

Thanks all, and thanks for being patient with me.

Has been headed back multiple times in past, this can be seen by looking at the trunks and branches. If you want to keep it small you will have to keep heading it back, every year.

Thanks Ron B. I hate to keep on heading it back; what's my alternative otherwise?
