I bought these plants recently in a Beijing flower market. The problem is they're usually labelled and called by a local name which, even if I can understand it, may not be widely used. Judging by the quantities for sale I suspect they're not uncommon. Unfortunately neither is my knowledge of plants uncommon (although my recent purchases have sparked a growing interest!) Even searching the web it's difficult to be sure you have the correct ID. Having perused other people's threads I have identified (fairly confidently) "Wandering Jew", "Spider plant" and "Mother-in-law's Tongue" so will not post photos of these. I think #1 here may be Philodendron Selloum or Hope but am not sure. #2 - No idea but has quite large leaves (c. 30cm x 60cm) #3 - Looks familiar but can't find it on the forums #4 - A small tree? Any suggestions re. care of the above (light requirements/watering/feeding etc.) will be gratefully accepted and acted upon prompty. The flower market vendors in Beijing apparently prize sales turnover somewhat more highly than accuracy of information! And, finally, a close up of the suspected Philodendron's rather sick looking leaves - any advice?? Thanks so much in advance...wandering through your site is like a stroll in the park!
#1 is the Selloum http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/PhiloHope.htm #2 not sure what it is ... #3 is a Rubber Tree http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/firobstd.htm #4 is a Schefflera http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/Amate.htm and the leaves on #1 just look like they have been torn from people walking by it dont look like any disease .. hope this had been some help to you Marn
Thanks so much for the ID and links for care instructions Marn! I thought the rubber plant was familiar - my mother has them at home! I will now endeavour to keep them alive. I think the P. Selloum has something more wrong with it than careless customers as the edges are all brown and more leaves seem to be succumbing to the same. And finally, I have since bought the following - can anyone tell me what it is?? Thanks again!
im not sure what could be wrong with it .. but now that you know the name mayb you can google it .. im sure you should find out info on it .. the new pic you posted is a Bromelaid ..here is a link on them ... http://www.denverplants.com/foliage/html/BroGuz.htm Marn
Thanks once again for the ID on Bromelaid Marn - I'll look up Philodendron illnesses! Thanks also L.plant, for the Spathiphyllum Floribundum possibility - but I think I may have misled you with the dimensions - each leaf is actually 60cm x 30cms! Also the leaves are darker and glossier than the "Spathiphyllum", and a little rounder at the end.
