It probably sounds strange, but I have no idea what to make of this 1.5 m tall shrub. Every time I think it looks like something (Urticaceae, Rhamnaceae, etc.) I run into a dead end. There something really familiar about it that I can't put my finger on. If anyone recognizes it, I'd be much obliged. I photographed it last May on a hillside (possibly wild, possibly cultivated, possibly weedy) in Malipo County, Yunnan Province. This part of Malipo is very close to the Vietnam border. The third image is of the surrounding countryside.
Not a plant I've ever seen before. Not Skimmia, though - that has its flowers and fruit in terminal clusters, not spaced along the stems, and thick, leathery leaves.
Hi! Hm, it's a new plant for me too!!! But I have asked an expert who was several times on botanical expeditions in Yunnan, and he told me it is Debregeasia longifolia (N.L. Burm.) Wedd. Urticaceae http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200006401
Looks familiar, name also not completely foreign. Suspect it is present at Heronswood and/or a local private garden that included plants obtained from Heronswood. This latter property was sold for re-development so I won't be able to go back there and look for the shrub.
Definitely worth looking out for. Most interesting with the orange mulberry like fruits. Now added to my ever lenghtening wish list! Sue and Blethyn Wynn Jones of Crug Farm Nursery in North Wales have it for sale. They often go plant hunting with Dan Hinkley, who used to have Heronswood, so no doubt you did see it there Ron. http://mailorder.crug-farm.co.uk/default.aspx?pid=12386 http://www.visoflora.com/photos-nat...xtref=http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=
I'm so glad to see this forum continued. Hope we will see some stumpers as well. I love seeing plants from all over the world.
