My brother "a plant enthusiast" told me that the plant in a pot on my front porch is a Norway pine. Having looked at pics of these I know he is incorrect. I am trying to find out what it is as I seem to be killing It, and would very much like it to continue to live, as I think it is very cool plant. The plant I am talking about is about 8 feet tall it has seven palm like fronds that seem to grow every year along the same time it grows up another six to eight inchs. At some point the fronds from previous years fall off and leave at knot of sorts. The plant has spiney like spikes that a catus has that stay intact for numerous years they turn a light brown which is the color of the trunk

Maybe Norfolk pine is meant ? Araucaria heterophylla. A pic of your plant may help.

"Norway Pine" is an archaic name for Red Pine (Pinus resinosa), a native of eastern Canada and the northeastern US, unlikely to grow well in California's climate (except high in the mountains).

I suspect Chimaera is right in concluding it is a Norfolk Island "Pine" (Araucaria heterophylla; actually not a pine at all), commonly grown in coastal California.
