I think these flowers are in Okanogan National Forest,WA Very dry pine trees forest These are on a small stem and with spots on the petals
scarlet gillia - it grows commonly in the undisturbed dry forests of BC Okanagan, too. Lyall's mariposa lily - very tiny flower (approx the size of a quarter coin) - it is very rare in BC (in Canada for that matter) - the only known "groves" of this flower are near Richter Pass ----- that said, it is quite common in the Methow Valley, WA State --- I have seen lots of it in bloom around the nature trails at Sun Mtn Lodge, Winthrop. ------ the mariposa that we get in BC Okanagan is taller plant, larger flower, and pale purple.
here is the official federal gov't Canada info about the rarity of the Lyall's in Canada http://www.registrelep-sararegistry.gc.ca/species/speciesDetails_e.cfm?sid=675 the interesting aspect to us is how other species go with the wildflowers - for example - the places we commonly see rattlesnakes ... that equals a spot where we will see certain flora - like Lewisia (bitter root). I realize that this simple observation makes sense from a university level field biology PoV - however, it's a good reminder for us (amateur not professional naturalists) - ie make the association. And for people who think there are no rattle snakes in the shaded ponderosa pine forest - for sure that is not true in BC Okanagan. Never step over a log.
