Hi, I have some small trees that reset themselves after we lost the larger one in the wind a few year ago. We would like to move a few of them but unsure what they are and when the best time of year is to move them. The branches are fury and the leaves are long and fairly thin in autumn the turn red (bright red) and have a small cone like shape that stay on all winter which is a redish colour, If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Yes, I agree, your description sounds like a Staghorn Sumac - they are short-lived trees and we also lost ours during a wind storm. They also send up many new little trees around the yard. Have a look at this link for Staghorn Sumac - Rhus Typhina http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhus_typhina
